Huon Trail

We encourage you to also visit the Huon Trail website.

Tasmania is a place of great diversity created in the rich tradition of its first people, the Aboriginal nations, the dramatic natural beauty of wilderness, the stark oppression of the colonial era and the contrasting privilege of the establishment. This has led to the emergence of an island people who value their independence and achievements through social collaboration, achieving respect and a unique living celebration of diversity.

This struggle for the sexually- and gender-diverse community in Tasmania has bonded a community that now is emerging from a hidden and often underground lifestyle. This in itself has created an interesting history of struggle that is worth discovering. This is also reflected in the corresponding survival of the Aboriginal communities and the emergence of the national green movement through the environmental battles in Tasmania.

Your visit to Tasmania, and particularly the Huon, will be a happy opportunity to engage in the unique island social culture of hospitality that exists in Tasmania in the gay community. It may be at a gay nightclub in Hobart, a SPECTRUM social event for men or women, or a bush walk conducted by the Wellington Wanderers. It may be booking your accommodation, having a coffee or meal at an accredited gay-owned or gay-friendly B&B or café/restaurant. Our hospitality is not Oxford Street style but it is just as friendly and gay.
